Making sure concrete coatings are applied just right—not too thick and not too thin—is the focus of the next installment in the PaintSquare Video Learning Center series.

"Concrete Paint Thickness" is the newest addition to the instructional video series that covers multiple aspects of protective coatings work.

"Concrete Paint Thickness" is the newest installment in the PaintSquare Video Learning Center series.

Created and narrated by experts at KTA-Tator Inc., the Video Learning series covers a wide range of topics in protective coatings work, from quality-control and health and safety issues, to basics on the proper use of coatings instruments.

From Lead Detection to Ventilation

Previous titles in the series include:

The series of short video segments includes "Concrete Cleanliness."

Future topics in the series include adhesion, holiday detection, steel surfaces and moisture testing.

Each installment is available free in the PaintSquare Video Learning Center.

Measuring Thickness

In this video (2:54), KTA's Ken Trimber discusses measuring the thickness of paint applied to concrete.

"The thickness of a single layer of coating, or the thickness of each layer in a multiple coat system, is critical for coating system performance," says Trimber.

If the paint is too thin, it won't fully protect underlying layers of substrate.

If it's too thick, solvents may not be able to evaporate, causing solvent entrapment, or the concrete could crack or not fully cure.

To verify the coating has been applied correctly, one can measure the wet film thickness as the coating is being applied, or destructively  and non-destructively measure the dry film thickness after the coating has dried.

Trimber discusses several methods and tools for these types of measurements.
