A new citric-acid-based rust remover announced by PPG Industries’ industrial coatings division is touted as a safe, environmentally friendly option for removing rust and mill scale.

The citric-acid-based cleaner, CorroKleen44 rust remover, was formulated without phosphates and other strong acids, the company says.

Its shear-thinning gel structure allows for easy spray application, PPG says, and a low-shear thixotropy that adheres the product to surfaces makes it easy to use on vertical, three-dimensional and hard-to-reach surfaces.

A citric-acid-based cleaner, CorroKleen44 rust remover, was formulated without phosphates and other strong acids, according to PPG Industries.

Intended for use on rusted or mill-scaled hot-rolled steel or rusted cold-rolled steel, CorroKleen 44 rust remover was designed to eradicate metallic oxides, heat scale and heat-treated stains. In most applications, CorroKleen 44 rust remover eliminates heavy oxidation and scale within two to four hours of application, the company says.

It is useful for the removal of blush/flash rust from previously blasted surfaces, according to PPG, and is ideal for cleaning industrial machinery, hot-rolled steel fabrications, heavy-duty construction equipment, valves, trailer frames and other equipment that is sensitive to blast media.

CorroKleen 44 is available in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums, and it can be applied with a brush, airless spray nozzle or manual sprayer, PPG says.

Considering the effect a citric acid based adhesive remover had on the minor spot rust on a metal door I was removing decals from, I'm not surprised by this at all.
