A Sherwin-Williams Company division is one of 243 firms selected for a Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2016, celebrating British business contributions to international trade, innovation and sustainable development.

The coatings manufacturer was recognized for its Dura-Plate 301W product via Sherwin-Williams Protective and Marine Coatings Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the company announced May 10.

“This award is testament to the whole team, the truly innovative nature of this product, and how it was conceived and developed to meet a specific gap in the market,” said Ian Walker, managing director for this segment, which is based in Bolton, U.K.

“We’re particularly proud that we have won such a prestigious honor,” said Ian Walker, managing director. “We understand how tough it is to be recognized at this level and what it means.”

The winners of the 2016 Queen’s Award for Enterprise were announced April 21. A complete list of 2016 award winners is available here.

Coatings Performance Impact

Sherwin-Williams Protective and Marine Coatings Division EMEA develops coatings for passive fire protection, oil and gas, and bridge and highway applications.

According to the company, its Dura-Plate 301W product qualified for this honor based on its contributions to the energy and infrastructure markets in Europe. The coating is reportedly able to extend coating seasons, thereby helping applicators enhance efficiencies and reduce overall project costs.

Because the cost of maintenance downtime is an issue in many markets (low winter temperatures can shorten the period in which coatings can be applied), the company’s technical team worked with key customers to expand the low-temperature capabilities and recoatability of the Dura-Plate 301 surface and humidity-tolerant epoxy technology.

Its humidity and temperature-tolerant properties not only protect assets in harsh environments, the company says, but also extends the coating application windows for maintenance and construction activities in a variety of markets, such as offshore, marine, industrial and infrastructure.

onshore and offshore applications

The recognized coating is said to provide unique surface, humidity and temperature-tolerant properties designed to protect assets in the harshest of environments.

“Our customers are now seeing the benefits of this coating, the difference it offers in terms of the extended season, and the financial advantages,” said Walker.

About the Queen’s Award for Enterprise

Winners of the annual Queen’s Awards—the highest official U.K. awards for British businesses—receive an invitation to attend a special reception at Buckingham Palace at which they meet the Queen. The winning businesses will also be able to use the esteemed Queen’s Awards emblem for the next five years.

Seven businesses received awards for sustainable development, and another 92 were granted awards for innovation. The category for international trade increased to 150 winners, indicating the high quality of entries from businesses showing outstanding growth in overseas earnings.

Six small and medium sized companies—Powder Systems Ltd, Peak Scientific Instruments, Liquid Gas Equipment Ltd, JCB Power, Visions RT and Inciner8 Limited —all achieved double recognition, receiving awards for both innovation and international trade.

This year marks the 50th anniversary for the winners of the Queen’s Awards program in what is also her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday year.
