How-to Helps Measure Surface Conditions

A how-to guide to properly measuring ambient conditions is the latest in an original series of video tutorials presented by KTA-Tator Inc. and produced by PaintSquare.

Narrated by KTA-Tator president Kenneth A. Trimber, How to Measure Ambient Conditions & Surface Temperature (2:55) shows the viewer how to use DeFelsko's PosiTector Dew Point Meter to measure ambient conditions such as surface temperature, air temperature, relative humidity and dew point.

How to Measure Ambient Conditions & Surface Temperature demonstrates the use of DeFelsko's PosiTector Dew Point Meter. The video is part of an original PaintSquare series.

The title is the newest addition to Coating Inspection Instruments: A PaintSquare Video Education Series, available exclusively through PaintSquare.com.

The series is co-produced by KTA-Tator and PaintSquare and will be rolled out throughout the rest of this year.

Ambient Conditions How-to

Determining ambient conditions is important to making sure surfaces and coatings are being prepared under proper conditions, Trimber notes.

Trimber demonstrates how to operate the meter, including stabilizing readings, taking a surface temperature, switching from Fahrenheit to Celsius, and reading the data.

Previous installments in the Coating Inspection Instruments series focus on, clockwise from top left, measuring wet and dry film thickness, determining blast cleanliness, and measure surface profile depth.

Future installments focus on the use of:

  • DeFelsko PosiTector 200, SPG and UTG probes;
  • Fischer Dualscope FMP100;
  • PATTI adhesion testers for steel and concrete;
  • Thermometers;
  • Tooke Gages;
  • SSPC-VIS 2 and SSPC-VIS 3;
  • Adhesion testing;
  • Moisure meters; and
  • Rilem Tubes.

The series is hosted by Trimber, who has been with KTA since 1968 and has more than 40 years of experience in the industrial painting field. He is a past president of SSPC and chairman of its Commercial Coatings Committee.

Trimber is an SSPC-Certified Protective Coatings Specialist, an SSPC C-3 Supervisor/Competent Person for the Deleading of Industrial Structures, and a NACE-Certified Coatings Inspector Level 3 (Peer Review).
